I always found that the sound of an old, out-of-tuned, upright piano had a special sound quality that has no equivalent in a concert grand piano. The natural deterioration of the tuning, sometimes happening over several years, even decades, gives a unique personality its instrument. They evoke a sonic entropy, the passage of time and its capacity to reveal flaws in objects and living beings. It instantly sounds nostalgic, giving the impression that something was lost over time. All the memory from the instrument and from all the musicians who have played on it seems to be encapsulated in that very specific tuning, impossible to replicate.
